Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to your questions about the end of the National Public Health Emergency.

On May 11, 2023 President Biden announced the termination of the national emergency and public health emergency declarations related to the COVID-19 pandemic. These emergency declarations have been in place since early 2020, and gave the federal government flexibility to waive or modify certain requirements in a range of areas, including in the Medicare, Medicaid, and in private health insurance. The ending of the public health emergency DOES NOT mean COVID is no longer a threat in our community. A COVID outbreak can resurge similar to the FLU. The ending of the national public health emergency just means local health departments will no longer be able to offer free services when it comes to COVID-19, such as testing or vaccines. We should all continue necessary safety precautions against the virus including receiving the COVID vaccine and booster.

For some, there may be out-of-pocket expenses for COVID testing including at-home tests, vaccines and boosters. It will be important for you to talk with your doctor and insurance provider to understand what costs you may now be responsible to pay.

If you are receiving Medicaid, you will be required to reenroll in the program to ensure your coverage continues. This is a mandatory requirement for ALL Medicaid recipients. It will be important for you to contact your insurance provider to determine your eligibility and reenrollment process.

Yes, there is currently no shortage of supply concerning the COVID vaccine or booster. Talk with your provider and schedule your next appointment.

About

The Covid Community Awareness Initiative

Jordan Health along with several other community and health organizations announced their latest efforts to increase awareness regarding the impact and importance of the COVID vaccine and boosters. Nearly three years since the start of the pandemic, new cases of COVID or COVID-related deaths are still being reported every week throughout the Greater Rochester area including Monroe County. The COVID vaccine and boosters have proven to provide the needed protections against the virus and minimize the impact of symptoms. However, there is still a significant amount of people who are either hesitant to get vaccinated or receive their COVID booster.

Partners

Organizations like Jordan Health, Rochester Regional Health System and Mosaic Health, The City of Rochester, Urban League of Rochester, Trillium Health, Action for a Better Community, IBERO, Regional Health Reach and Common Ground Health have partnered thanks to the support of the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) to hear from the community and provide additional education about the COVID vaccine and boosters.
